North Sphere
(UNESCO)
In collaboration with UNESCO, North Sphere is a brand developed for an emerging Biosphere Reserve within Doncaster and the Humberhead Levels. I was responsible for creating the full visual identity, including brand guidelines, a website, and printed materials. The brand is designed to feel energising, nature-connected, and educational. Its visual language features a warm, approachable typeface paired with the custom icon The North Arrow, which adds a distinct and versatile visual element. This icon also forms the foundation for a wider set of brand iconography, as detailed in the guidelines. The name North Sphere and its logo proudly reflect the region's unique status as the first Biosphere in the north of England—a milestone worth celebrating through thoughtful, memorable design.

The Process
The process of creating North Sphere was a great chance to experiment with elements relating to nature. The aim of this rebrand was to bring more tourism to the area, whilst still maintaining a healthy and safe haven for the residents. Creating tourism within an area is always a big worry for the local community, this is something I had to consider within the branding itself. I wanted the new rebrand to double as not only an appealing visual identity, but one that can also be used to educate tourists on best practice when visiting such a protected area of land.
This brand guidelines outlines the best practice of how to use the North Sphere identity correctly, including examples of "Do's and Dont's. The logo features bold typography, with a rounded and organic feel. The North Sphere arrow is a key symbol within the branding, which can act as a powerful stand alone logo mark. When creating this branding, a key question me and the client discussed was: What makes this biosphere so unique compared to the existing examples? This area is actually the first biosphere in the North of England, which we agreed was a huge accomplishment that should be celebrated, hence the name North Sphere. The colour palette feels fresh and exciting, as well as working in harmony with the surrounding biosphere. For example, signage placed within the biosphere will harmonise with the nature, it won't stick out like a 'sore thumb'.
This project was a great opportunity to not only have full creative reign on a branding, from start to finish. But it also teaches the importance of protecting the world we live in, and ensuring it thrives and survives the traffic that it endures. Protecting our wildlife starts at home, we can all make the right changes through education.
